Walsall boss Jon Whitney believes that youth is the way forward at Walsall and calls on supporters to show patience.

Speaking to Express and Star, Whitney said

“Young players who are good enough to have careers and make names for themselves at Walsall Football Club.’

“If you are going to take the Gillingham game, when we have got five academy players in the starting line-up and one coming off the bench, then I don`t think they deserve the boos.’

“I`m proud to have this opportunity and to have that title (as manager). But if you have got that title you have to accept criticism as well.’

“I can take it for my young players – that is what I am here for. I am an old, wise head. And I understand frustrations.’

But I also hope they (the fans) understand what we are trying to achieve at this club.’

Whitneys comments have taken us all a little by surprise given no supporter has vented any frustrations at any of our youngsters in the past few weeks – Liam Kinsella was at fault for the goal on Saturday but has received support from alot of fans on Twitter over the weekend.

Not only does it surprise us in that respect but also in the fact that until now Whitney has kept our youngsters far from the starting XI which has seen them overlooked by our loanees like Donnellan, Wilson, Roberts and Agyei.

On Saturday five of the seven substitutes were signings made by Jon Whitney during the summer, is he now suggesting that his signings arent good enough and we already had the players we required at the club?

It will be interesting to see what side Whitney goes with this evening, head over to our Twitter page where you can get involved with deciding on your starting XI for this evening.
