Young fan stepping up to support a brilliant cause!

|

Walsall fans have always supported the community around them. We have seen fans rally to help the area they live in, whether that be to provide meals, raise money for charity, or pitch in to do physical work. This is something that makes us all proud to be Saddlers, and now another fan is stepping up to help a very good cause.

What’s the charity?

Young Walsall fan Luke Grocutt has embarked on a month long challenge to support a fantastic charity. Luke is raising money for CLIC, a charity that supports young people suffering with Cancer and Leukaemia. When asked why he chose this specific charity, Luke spoke of a personal connection to the charity:

I initially reached out to my friend who’s little lad has cancer. I wanted to help raise any sort of money that could help aid any medical costs. He was really grateful and touched by that, but explained they’ve had incredible support and are financially stable. So I asked him if their were any charities he thought would be good to raise for and he told me about CLIC.

CLIC helps the patient and their families throughout their time battling the illness. This care and support starts at the beginning, helping the family with the early stages of coming to terms with what lies ahead. They also help with financial support, care, and more.

What is Luke doing to help?

Luke, 19, is looking to do a month long challenge, to run 100k throughout over the course of March:

Initially I had a target of £100/£200 to run 50k throughout March, which doesn’t seem a lot but when you consider I’m 16 stone it was a good idea. I then thought I’d push myself for 60k, and I can probably just raise the £200. Later that day I saw a lad say he was running 100k for charity, and I just thought I really need to do this and push the boat out.

Luke admits that to some people, this would not be too much of a difficult task, but for him, it is a real challenge. Running 100k will push himself, and hopefully raise some vital money.

I wanted to lose a bit of weight as I’m a quite a big lad. I can never keep myself motivated to do exercise anymore, so I knew I’d give it up after a week or so. So I thought what better to do something for a good cause.

How has it been going?

Luke is now a few days into the month long challenge, and it has started better than anticipated, both on the running front, and his target for money raised:

I’ve raised £365 in 3/4 days, and I’m really hoping to smash £500. I am overwhelmed by all the support, it’s been incredible. A few days in, and I am already over 10k, and I am hoping to do around 25k+ every week.

We wish Luke the best of luck with his challenge, and will be supporting him every step of the way!

Good luck Luke. I ran 100k throughout February for CancerResearch and can assure you it’s a brilliant achievement and definitely worth pushing for and managed to raise over £400. Good luck on the rest of your running this month and keep at it,wish you all the best.
