We are saddened to hear that former Walsall captain Albert McPherson has today passed away.

Albert McPherson was skipper of the Walsall side that won the Division Four Championship in 1959/60 and then achieved a second successive promotion at the end of the following campaign.

McPherson was born on 8th July 1927 in Salford.

McPherson started his career with Royal engineers before moving to Bury 1949 and then onto Stalybridge Celtic in 1952. It was his performances during his two years that alerted Walsall to him and the Saddlers signed him in 1954. McPherson would stay with the Saddlers for the next ten years, playing 351 appearances scoring 8 goals.

In his tenth year McPherson was given a testimonial and a Walsall All Star XI faced an All star XI.

McPherson was named as the third greatest Walsall captain in the Football League’s 125th anniversary awards.

Everyone at Vital Walsall sends our condolences to his family at this time.

Rest In Peace Albert. Saddlers legend.
