To be honest, I predicted a draw, but a wins a win and I’m a happy Saddler!

Looking at Brighton, I thought they would’ve proved more of a threat, maybe even scoring some goals.

However, a 21-year curse means that Walsall remain undefeated at the Withdean, which makes me very happy, as it’s nice to be the boggie team for once, lol!

The new-look Saddlers starting XI looked quite attacking and could prove to be a master-stroke from Hutch and his gang for us to have more than just a comfortable season. Let’s not get carried away, we weren’t exactly Brazilian wonderkids with every touch on Saturday, but with Accrington next on the agenda, we can feel confident of progressing in the cup, as well as even beating Southend next Saturday.

It is going to be a difficult month that will sort out the men from the youngsters in the squad, with Leeds, Charlton and Gillingham to play before September. By the end of the month, we as Saddlers fans should have more idea about what to expect from this season.

Now remember this….I’m not a firm believer in omens, but the last time we opened the season with a 1-0 victory, which was an own goal, we didn’t score many goals but went joint top by the end of the month. We eventually went on to finish second in what was one of my memorable season’s as a Saddler. I am of course refering to Ray Graydon’s barmy army of 98/99. You never know, history could repeat itself!
