A 0-0 draw with near enough neighbours Worcester would be enough to question the Saddlers chances of doing well next season.
However, it was the first match that the newly formed Walsall side have played since their 1-1 title winning draw at Swindon in May.
Therefore, DD was quick to come out and look at the positives at what was a stalemate in every sense of the expression.
Talking to the offical Walsall website, DD explained that the match had gone to plan and that his team were on schedule for the new season on August 11.
He said: ‘Everyone had a good feel of the ball and we came away with no injuries.
‘We went into the game on the back of a hard week at Lilleshall where the players worked three times a day.
‘We needed this match, hence the determination to get it played. It was good to be able to give so many players 45 minutes of action.’
DD also talked about the trialists that were on show, including former Portugal Under-21 international Mario Pedro, Gambian international winger Edrissa Sonko, and Brazilian striker Junior (not the one who left on bad terms to go to Derby).
He said: ‘There were three trialists on show and we will take their situation on a day-by-day basis. Each of them showed us a few things at Lilleshall and we learned a bit more about them at Worcester.
DD will be looking to run the rule over the trialists and the rest of his squad when the Saddlers travel to Stafford Ranger on Tuesday night (KO 7.45pm) before playing Halesowen Town on Wednesday (KO 7.30pm).
