Chairman Jeff Bonser has talked to local paper the Birmingham Evening Mail about the financial crisis the club has suffered in the days since the ITV Digital collapse. The good news is we seem to have managed our way out of the worse and as Jeff puts it the dark days are over.
He told reporters
‘I think we are over the worst,It takes time to recover from a four to five million pound hole in the finances and we had some dark days when it was a real battle to make sure the club did not go into administration or liquidation.
‘It was so difficult because we had to keep changing our business plan.
We prepared for the Championship then went down to League One and then to League Two and everybody knows what difference relegations make to your revenue streams.
‘It was very difficult. But we made profits in the last two seasons and hopefully will again this year.
‘On the field too there is clear progress. We made a very poor start this season, there is no hiding from that.
‘The manager made a lot of changes and some of the new players did well but others not so well. But now things are starting to gel and Tommy Mooney and Michael Ricketts up front is one of the most dangerous strike-partnerships in the division.
‘That gives Richard options. Obviously, with Michael, it’s tempting to play 4-4-2, because we all like to see wingers, but with his options I think the manager will alternate.’
Although the chairman gets a load of stick from some quaters especially when the ownership of the land which the stadium stands comes into question, credit where credit is due ask fans of some of the other clubs, I bet some fans of Swindon and Luton would swop positions at the moment…..well done Jeff
