Martin O Connor told the Sunday Mercury exactly what he thought of his players today.
In his last game in charge at the defeat against Peterborough now nearly a week ago, he was sent to the stands after losing his temper over a goal that should have been disallowed. He has obviously not calmed down in the week since he was sacked on Tuesday.
O Connor laid into his former players and sided with the angry fans prior for the sacking of himself and Hutchings and that he would have given up coming long before now.
He seethed: ‘(I) am sure I would have given my opinion pretty forcefully if I had paid to watch some of the drivel that we served up.’
He made no hesitation in not blaming himself or Hutchings in the team’s descent into the relegation zone and criticised that players for keeping their wages after defeats.
He continued: “What I can say is that at no point did any of them come to us on a Monday morning and say ‘gaffer I didn`t earn my match fee on Saturday – give it to charity`. Perhaps there were a few cases where that would have been in order.’
O Connor continued to shoot himself in the foot as he admitted their poor choice of loan players and berated their efforts: ‘(We) brought in some loanees but only some of them worked and then only for a while. It was nowhere near good enough.” He went on.
He rounded off his rant with: “It`s all about the players and if they are not doing it for you, you carry the can. You work with them and set them up but when they cross that white line it`s up to them.
O Connor’s reaction is nothing less than unnecessary and infuriating. Walsall player’s are on comparatively low wages as it is to give them up. There are many problems with the board and it is not for him to dictate what they player’s should do with their cash. Maybe if they were allowed to play in a consistent team then it would have produced a more efficient team, not leaving the club in such a mess as it is. There are no doubt some quality players in the side and Hutchings and O Connor did an excellent job of leading them astray. He should let sleeping dogs lie and be grateful he got out when he could.
Walsall now have the delicate task of League One survial, and, after that outburst, I am even more pleased the duo have gone. If this temper is anything to go by then he certainly wouldn’t have been a pleasure to work for, contrary to many of the player’s opinions.
