Saddlers Legends

Ask most Walsall fans about who was the worst goalkeeper ever to put on a Saddlers shirt and it’s quite difficult to answer (although Carl Emberson’s brief period between the posts sticks horribly in my mind!)

Ask who was the best and its a choice of two for most people- Jimmy Walker or Mick Kearns. There are of course others and if people want to criticise me and put forward the case for them you can do that on the forum!

Kearns however has a legendary status at Walsall not only for his goalkeeping exploits but his dedication to the club over the years.

He was ever-present for three whole seasons in the 70’s during which time he helped us on our way to the fifth round of the FA Cup in 1975 and played against both Manchested United and Newcastle.

Having left the club in 1979 to join Wolves he rejoined in the early 80’s. There aren’t many players who can get away with joining Wolves and then coming back! Having said that Kearns did and he is now one of the most popular men at Bescot, sorry, Bank’s stadium (I still aven’t got used to that!).

During the last 15 years, Mick has played a massive role in the club’s community programme as well providing help for for some of the younger players coming through the ranks and the occasional bit of radio work.

It’s always great to see him at matches and he is a real gentleman. A true Walsall legend.
