Saddlers Legends

There are loads of heroes from our memorable win over Arsenal in 1933 (I say memorable in as much as something that happened 50 years before you were born can be!) but there was one man that played that day who will forever be remembered by Saddlers fans.

It’s strange to think really that a man who was only at the club for four years could make the impact that Gilbert Alsop did. But with 151 goals from 195 games his legendary status can’t really be argued with.

Alsop had two spells at Walsall, his first after he arrived from Coventry in 1931 where he was never really given the chances he deserved playing only 16 times in two seasons for the Sky Blues.

His second in 1938 was only brief having had short spells with West Brom and Ipswich but he still played with passion and commitment he always did.

When he retired Alsop stayed in Walsall area and became a groundsman and trainer at Fellows Park and was always popular amongst the fans.

After his death in 1992 a stand at the newly built Bescot was named after him and he is still remembered today even by fans that never met him.
