Saddlers Memorable Matches

Walsall 5 Peterborough 0 12 September 2006

Possibly the best Saddlers performance this season saw us continue our remarkable start to the season.

Having just lost for the first time against Grimsby (I’m still not sure how we lost that!) DD’s men responded with a display of calmness and quality.

We also had to contend with a very dodgy referee in Janil Singh who firstly sent off big Ant Gerrard for a nothing challenge before finding other bizarre reasons to send off two Posh players with a couple of minutes to go.

The referee aside though, it was a great game (well for us, not so much for Peterborough). Within the first five minutes Posh had a goal disallowed for offside and they were made to pay for some poor defending two minutes later.

Daniel Fox found himself on the edge of the box after a pull-back from Mark Wright and he slammed home a screamer of a left foot strike. Fox’s first goal as a Saddler was soon followed by the first for Michael Dobson.

Within ten minutes Dobbo had smashed home two shots leaving us 3-0 up after 27 minutes. Until half time the game stayed open and to be fair to Posh they tried to carry on playing but had no end product.

After half time, Gerrard saw red for an innocuous clash of heads but despite being down to ten men the goals kept on coming. Martin Butler grabbed two for himself in the space of five minutes and the game was well and truly over.

This was definitely one of if not the best performance from DD’s men this season. Tell us what you think on our forum.
