From Scotland to the Saddlers

|

Here we have a Q and A with Nicky Devlin. Despite being part of the team that was relegated last season, Nicky was a fan favourite.

Firstly, how did your transfer to Walsall first come about?

It was my agent that contacted me and said Walsall wanted to meet me to discuss my plans for next year, so I went to carlisle to meet Jon Witney and Neil Cutler, we basically agreed everything that day!

What was your favourite match to play in?

My favourite match would be either Coventry in the Fa Cup or Northampton, I’ll go with Northampton game because how important it was at the time for the club.

What was your favourite goal?

The Coventry goal, was an unbelievable game being 2-0 up then back to 2-2, then scoring the winner in an emotional game for everyone at the club, myself especially was amazing!

Who is the best player you ever played with?

Played with would either be Tyler Roberts or Erhun Oztumer, both were very good, I think Dobbo could play right at the top level one day as well though!

Who is the best player you ever played against?

Either Jack Grealish when we played them pre season or Aiden Mcgeady for Sunderland, he was so sharp.

What went through your mind when you saw the ball hit the back of the net against Coventry?

Shock at first probably but it was such An amazing feeling! It was just so emotional because of what it meant, definitely one of my highlights of being at club.

We all remember the work you did with the Rainbow Group, and are thankful for what you did with them, do you still keep in touch with them?

I’ve not recently, but I still keep up to date on what great work they are doing, I think Robbo took over from me in terms of being the player contact with the club, they do amazing work!

What are , if any, the differences between the English and Scottish leagues, in terms of the playing style?

There are obviously a lot less games up here so you have much more time to recover than in England, also with the winter break we have up here you feel fresher going into games, it’s not as demanding on the body.

What are you up-to in this lockdown?

Trying to keep fit haha, we’ve been given programs to follow so sticking to that to try and give myself a good base for when we do you back to playing, whenever that will be ..

How has your recovery been since your injury earlier this season?

It’s never good to be injured long term, but my recovery went as well as i could of hoped, I managed to get back and play one game before the league got shut down, so hopefully we will get back soon as I’ve not been able to play much this season.

Thanks to Nicky for answering those for us. We wish him well and hope he is back out playing soon.
