Walsall boss Dean Smith has today hinted that he will use a 3-5-2 formation next season as he looks to find more options than his favoured 4-2-3-1.

The Saddlers have had two underwhelming seasons in League 1 playing
4-2-3-1 and it is hoped with Smith using the blue print of Bristol City’s 3-5-2 formation, that the Saddlers can now start pushing up the League 1 table.

Speaking to Express And Star, Smith said “We threw a system at the players that we have tried couple of times in pre-season for the Albion game and they handled it really well,” Smith said.

“When people talk about three at the back it can seem ultra defensive. But as we saw it can be as aggressive or as defensive as you want it to be.”

Dean Smith also hit out at the suggestion that he doesn’t experiment with his formations and said “It amuses me at times because we have tried other formations.”

It will be interesting to see what formation Walsall implement at Luton on Saturday in our final pre-season game.
