What a week!
The Saddlers end a turbulent week with an unexpected but deserving 1-0 victory over promotion chasing Tranmere Rovers.
In a week which saw the Sadders suffer their seventh straight defeat against ten men bottom of the league Scunthorpe, head coach Matt Taylor sacked, more Walsall fans calling Radio WM than ever before and a peaceful protest organised by ISSA, many wouldn’t have expected a win against a Tranmere side who had lost just one league game in their last fourteen.
Caretaker boss Neil McDonald made three changes to the side who lost at Scunthorpe on Tuesday night, in came Sam Perry – for his first start since September, Brendan Kiernan and Conor Wilkinson.
Conor Wilkinson’s late penalty ensured the Saddlers got a MASSIVE three points and took us six points off the trap door to the National League.
Saddlers fans far and wide shared their delight at the result

Organised. Simple. Basics done well. Perry in – much more of complement to Kins (who was immense). Monthe and Daniels solid. Wilko's body language so much better. Even Tyrese looked a bit like a footballer on occasion. Happy #walsallfc fan today. #saddlers #uts

That's what we needed all season back to basics and look at the shift the players put in . Don't need to complicate this league .

In league 2 it’s all well and good wanting 60 70% of the ball but all it really takes is a drilled defence 11 players with solid basics and togetherness Richard Money built a title winning side on that @VitalWalsall up the saddlers 🔥

Went back to basics and we finally went back to 4-4-2. Kept it organised and simple. Enjoyed every minute of that game and thought Perry done more than Ladible all season.
Appreciate Morris purposely missing that free-kick for us. "HE ONE OF OUR OWN" 🎶

Can't believe we actually got a decision from the referee in our favour. Also great to get a clean sheet

Fantastic performance & result. Back to basics, every player did there job, we deserved the 3 points from that game.
Build on it, for the first time for months we can be proud of the lads

Proper Walsall performance. Players putting a shift in for each other. Battled for every ball and had just enough quality to win. Take them at face value but Tranmere were very poor, which makes things s frustrating in terms of our league position

Was Tuesday night a blessing in disguise? The entire football club appears to have woken up to the danger of drifting out of the EFL. Though the support was really patient today and you could visibly see confidence returning on the pitch. Big assist from Kieron in injury time.

We started with 4-4-2! Matty Taylor was at the wrong club and the wrong level for his 1-2-3-2-1-1 formation 🤣. Every player busted there balls today and looked comfortable in there roles. Keep it up lads x @VitalWalsall pic.twitter.com/gdDgHNE0tL
