Walsall have today signed former Sheffield Wednesday and Chesterfield goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell on a one year deal following a succesful trial with the Saddlers.

O’Donnell began his career with Sheffield Wednesday but over a period of six years O’Donnell only managed to play in 15 games for the Owls. During that time O’Donnell spent loan spells at York, Buxton, Rotherham, Oldham, Grimsby, Alfreton and Macclesfield Town.

Whilst at Macclesfield, O’Donnell caught the attention of Chesterfield and joined Chesterfield in the summer of 2012. He played 14 games for the Spireites until he was again loaned out – this time to Stockport County.

O’Donnell has impressed boss Dean Smith over the pre season period and will hope to establish himself as Number 1.

Smith has prioritised the need for a ‘keeper and states that both O’Donnell and youngster Liam Roberts have been informed of his plans to bring in another ‘keeper.

Everyone at Vital Walsall welcomes O’Donnell to WS1 and wish him the best of luck during his stay.
