Walsall Wednesdays

Well, this week has been one that has changed the face of Walsall. New kit, with a new manufacturer, new sponsor, who are lifelong Walsall fans, and a new badge, which is meant to show an upward swift that shows the direction the club is going in. It is all in aid of celebrating promotion back to League One, which is nice. However, I have news, as I am a journalist and it`s my job, but I think we have a lot to do if we are to even stay in League One next year. DD has made it public that he wants Walsall to challenge to get back-to-back promotion, but if we lose at home to Bury, albeit one of our bogie sides, questions are not surprisingly being asked.

Before I go on about the playing side, I would like to voice my opinion on the new kit. I like it! I assumed it would be made by Nike, as the kit deal was originally a three year deal, of which two years have been served, but the kit make has changed to Swift. Cool name! The classic look of a white shirt with red shorts is different, and I have been trying to get my head around it since it was unveiled yesterday. It will be weird watching the Reds in white. Will they become the Whites instead? Uh?panic. Also, the away kit is funky. Although, all Walsall away strips seem to be blue, which Roy Whalley says is to commemorate the Walsall Town and Walsall Swifts alliance back in retro 1888. All I can say is I like it, but we now need the players to put in it.

A striker, a midfielder, a defender maybe? Things you would associate with improving the squad to compete in League One, or at least things I associate with the problem. We need to improve these areas or go all the way back to square one again. There needs to be a prolific striker and another midfielder, preferably one that is on the same bloodline as Dean Keates. Dobson does not stand a chance of making an impact on League One, as he is too slow and his touch is rubbish. I have said this all season. All he does is just jump everywhere, make a pass to the full back, then jump around some more before being beaten for pace. He has scored some vital goals for us this season, but I think he will not make the step-up. Also, a striker has already been added to the shortlist, but will get one in the mould of Jorge Leitao or Andy Rammell? Probably not at the moment. I do trust DD.
