Walsall Wednesdays

Michael Ricketts, Teddy Sherringham, James Sutton, Darren Byfield, James Hayter, and even Kevin Harper. These are just a few of the players that have been linked to WS1 over the last week or so. And that’s great, but what are the chances of us signing any of these people, who to be fair, are probably out of our budget range?

Since the departure of Dean Keates and Hector Sam, we are looking at our very own centre-back Scott Dann to provide the goals at the moment, as he is the only player left that was consistent in front of goal last season, as Martin Butler was not. DD has already stressed how the club need to sign two strikers with a lot of pedigree in order to compete in League One. A slightly obvious statement, but one that needs to be made reality. Too many Walsall managers have promised to find a striker who will propell the club to greater heights. Only Roger Boli, Andy Rammell, and Jorge Leitao are the only strikers that we have signed that scored goals on a regular basis. With DD and PT looking abroad to bring in trialists, the Saddlers are hoping for another Jorge, rather than another Bica.

Out of all the names mentioned above, Teddy Sherringham is the only name that excites me. He may be 41, but he can still cut it, especially in the third tier of English football. His knowledge would be key, and it would probably help Butler get his goals, as well as improving our young crop of talent, in particular Troy Deeney. Another name in the list that should stand out is the brother of Chris, John Sutton. He is 23 and plays for St Mirren, scoring 25 goals in 57 matches. He would be a good addition to the squad with his ability to score spetacular goals, including the goal that kept St Mirren in the SPL for next season.

I am sure that whoever comes in can do the job, but it needs to be soon.
