With Saturday’s 1-1 draw against fellow mid-table side Oxford United, Walsall Manager Jon Whitney is hoping that his side can finish the season with a flourish.

The Saddlers are currently sat in a rather disappointing 14th place after 41 games, with most fans agreeing the the squad should probably be operating in a slightly higher position. That could however be the case if Walsall can string together a set of positive results against opponents who in the main are battling to stay in the division.

Speaking to the Official Walsall FC website Whitney, said: “We want to finish as high as we can and I want to as a manager, I want to win every game we play.

“I want to pick a team based on how my players look in training – who looks hungry, who`s got a bit of passion and who wants to come and put the shirt on in a local derby? We`ve got two derbies, Shrewsbury and Coventry, and three home games – it`s a great five games for me as a manager.”

And the Saddlers faithful will travel to Shropshire on Friday hoping for a first away win of 2017. Last season’s fixture at the New Meadow was one of the most memorable moments of Whitney’s tenure in charge -albeit in a caretaker capacity at the time – and a repeat performance is hopefully on the horizon.
