At 36 years old, most Saddlers fans would have expected Adam Chambers to sign an additional one-year extension to his contract, or even take a very well deserved retirement. However, to some shock today, it was announced Chambers has in fact penned a new two year deal with the club until the end of the 2018/19 season.
It’s an interesting move from the club, Chambers has pretty much been a mainstay of the Saddlers side since joining in 2011, but of course is well into his twilight years at the ripe old age of 36. It says something about the stability of the club as a whole that he’s only played under 3 permanent managers during that time, Smith, O’Driscoll and now Whitney. And it’s hard to say that his performances are dramatically declining with age, at times last season he seemed like only one of a handful who were willing to ‘put a foot in’ and work for the team.
Maybe it’s Chambers’ obvious dedication to the profession that has persuaded Whitney to keep him around for another two years. Quite simply, Chambers is the absolute personification of Whitney’s ‘work ethic, passion and desire’ mantra.
The way that football – especially at WFC – works though, don’t be surprised if Chambers eventually replaces Whitney in the dugout at the Banks’s.
