Midfielder James Baxendale has today signed a new three year deal with Walsall.

Baxendale was a product of the Leeds youth team before joining Doncaster permanently in 2011. Following his lack of first team action former Doncaster assistant Richard O’Kelly jumped at the chance of working with Baxendale once more and persuaded him to join the Saddlers last season.

In January this year, Baxendale signed a new 18 month contract but his performances towards the end of last season, persuaded Dean Smith and the Walsall board to tie down Baxendale on a longer deal.

Baxendale is a popular figure amongst the Walsall faithful and to see him in a Walsall shirt for another three years is a massive boost as we approach the new season.

Following the loss of Grigg, Brandy and Paterson, the club have shown real intent of holding onto their prized assets and are starting to learn from previous errors.

The last three year deal we offered to a player was Darren Wrack.

Many will hope that Paul Downing and Sam Mantom will now sign longer term deal as we try to continue with our success.
