Former Captain Takes Over Until The Summer

|

Former Walsall captain and club legend Martin O’Connor will take control as manager of the club until the end of the season.

The 51 year-old will be assisted by John Ward, Andy Davies and Michael Oakes

O’Connor who has made over one hundred and fifty appearances for the Saddlers during three spells with the club is left with the task of keeping us in League 1.

Twenty five years ago, O’Connor joined the Saddlers on loan from Crystal Palace and his performances forced the club to make his switch permanently in the summer of 1993.

He played a pivotal role in securing promotion from Division 3 in the 94-95 season before moving to Peterborough United the following year.

O’Connor then moved onto Birmingham City before returning back to the Saddlers  in 2002.

He came back to the club in 2009 for a fourth spell as assistant manager. However results were poor and he and Chris Hutchings were sacked with the club rooted to the foot of the League 1 table.

In March he joined the Saddlers for a fifth time offering help to struggling boss Dean Keates. The Saddlers won their opening two games but following five defeats on the spin Dean Keates was sacked on Saturday evening.

There are five games left, we are just one point from safety. Let’s get behind Skip and the lads for the run in.
