Captain Mark Hughes has left Walsall to take up an offer from the Australian Hyundai A League side North Queensland Fury

Hughes, speaking to the official website, said that it was an offer he could not turn down.

He said:’It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and if I don’t go for it I think I’ll always be thinking ‘what if’.

In a meeting between captain and manager, it was agreed that it was the best thing to do for both parties.

Boss Hutchings added, speaking to the official site: ‘We spoke at length about the move and agreed to go our separate ways. Mark feels that this is an opportunity he wants to pursue and we will not stand in his way.’

Due to Hughes signing a contract acceptance form and Walsall retaining his registration, he is unable to sign for an English club for the next twelve months.

Hughes said he enjoyed his time as a Saddler and wished the club luck, adding: ”It’s not a decision I’ve taken lightly. I’ve really enjoyed my time at Walsall and will miss the players, staff and fans. It’s a good club and I wish them well.’
