Alex Nicholls has said that Walsall need a firm voice on the field to inspire and lead the team, something he says has been lacking in the past few seasons.

Mark Hughes took the reins as captain last season since arriving a year ago, but Nicholls says there needs to be more leadership if they are to progress from the 10th place finish.

He told the express and star: “It`s only really the manager and assistant who do it. We don`t have an out and out leader..we’ve missed someone who will pull everyone together on the pitch.’

Nicholls admits he misses former captain Tommy Mooney after he left in 2008.

He added:”If the manager brings in someone for next season, it should be good and it should pull everyone together.”
