Is a Striker a second priority?

Max Melbourne has today returned to parent club Lincoln after half a season on loan at Stevenage.

He is the prime example of what could have been if Walsall had their act together last season, a player needing a home, and a proposition on the table.

He didn’t sign, and becomes another ex-player who could have fit the bill that we will see playing for other teams, potentially still trying to find the right fit.

It would have been the answer to a problem Walsall have, and maybe even more so than the issue up top.

Left-Back top of the shopping list

Although he had a poor game at the weekend, the signing of Rollin Menayese was a high priority, and a pice of business that was easier to do.

Attentions then quickly turned to other areas of the pitch, with many Saddlers fans quoting one particular role they want to see recruited in.

Stephen Ward has struggled at Walsall. The ex Premier League player has started dropping down the leagues in recent seasons, and sadly, it is not difficult to see why.

He has played a lot of minutes for someone of his age, and unfortunately, Walsall of late have been conceding a lot of goals through attacks down his side.

A new left-back, with more pace, and that has pace to go both forwards and track back, would benefit the team as a whole, not just the defence.

Needed more than a striker?

Despite everything, Walsall have only failed to find the back of the net on five occasions in the league this season.

It shows that the side have the ability to score, but they can’t seem defend well enough to gain more points in matches.

A better left back, who can support an attack as well as tighten things at the back, would be more beneficial than a striker, when goals keep getting conceded.

The question is, can one be found. Melbourne has played for two sides already this season, looks likely to feature for Lincoln now he is back.

He is the right mould that Walsall need, now it is up to Jamie Fullerton and Matt Taylor to find a player who fits it.
