Message boards have been full of speculation linking walsall with a move for Wolves striker Leon Clarke. The speculation couldn’t decide if it would be a season long lone or trying to sign him on some sort of deal.
At the time the fact that a fee was likely to be required made the rumour seem like a non starter. However news first broken on Vital message boards that we are willing to use some of the Sky money on Torquays Jamie Ward means that such things are not dissmissed out of hand as they once were. It is true Richard Money said that there was no budget for a transfer fee, and Walsall have a history of not paying transfer fees. However it is rumoured since the TV monies are income which was not budgeted for Jeff Bonser is allowing the money to be used by DD to strengthen the team in anyway he see’s fit, as long as the wage structure isn’t broken and hence no threat is made to the long term financial stability of the club.
As for Leon Clarke himself he has had a rough time been accepted by the dingles. He spent some time early in his career at Plymouth and one fan has gone on record as describing him as the worse player he has seen, but things improved but he has sliped down the Wolves pecking order, and with money tight at the dirty orange ground he has finally been told he can go.
The Wolverhampton born striker is 6.02 ft tall and started out playing on loan at Kidderminster and QPR without scoring. Then at the end of last season there was five games at Plymouth. For wolves in 41 starts he has scored 13 goals,but has also spent 43 games on the bench. He has also broke his duck in scoring in the FA Cup and league cup.
The big question is would he want to come to Walsall could we afford the package, is he better than what we have already got.
