New Walsall striker Tommy Mooney stole the night with a superb hattrick to sink Stafford Rangers.
It was nearly all show and no trousers in the first minute when Money’s men fell behind to a Matt Fisher efforts from a Richard Sutton corner.
However, as Saddlers heads were looking down, Martin Butler was brought down in the penalty to area, which resulted in Mooney equalising with a spot kick on ten minutes.
Then, just before the referee blew his half-time whistle, Butler was released into space only for his effort to be pawed into Mooney’s path, who finished well to make it 2-1 to Walsall.
After half-time, there was a flurry of Saddlers substitutions, which included the return of Scott Dann to the defence and the introduction of Gambian international winger Eddie Sonko.
On 57 minutes, Mooney completed his hat-trick with a superb shot into the bottom corner to make the score 3-1 to the Saddlers and give the team a morale boosting win.
It was a game that had seen an excellent all-round display from Walsall.
The team chosen for the match was a little out-of-sorts with Darren Wrack playing the game at right back, but linking up well with Sonko after his introduction to the game.
The match also saw Paul Hall substituted for trialist Eddie Sonko, and then re-introduced in place of Martin Butler to play as a striker.
It also saw a first appearance for new striker Carlos Carneiro, who replaced hat-trick hero Tommy Mooney late on, as well as trialist Paul Boertien at left back.
All-in-all, DD used his team to see which player was comfortable in a variety of positions.
There was a crowd of 643 spectators on a calm and sunny evening in Staffordshire, as the Saddlers raised their game after a stalemate at Worcester City on Saturday.
Watch out for more match reaction from the Walsall camp later today on Vital Football.
