Former Boss Believes He Would Have Kept Walsall Up

|

Former Walsall boss Jon Whitney has called on Saddlers fans to stick by Darrell Clarke as he knows he will do a good job.

The Saddlers sacked Whitney in March last year following four defeats in five. Defeat to Shrewsbury saw the Saddlers drop to 14th in League 1 and just six points above the drop zone, however Whitney believes he would have kept the side up that season.

Speaking to the Express and Star, Whitney said

“I know Darrell will do a good job if the fans can stick with him”

“I loved my 15 years. I didn’t feel it was the right time for me to go. I know we would have been safe that year.”

“I’m proud to have done 100 games in L1 & never lost 3 on the bounce. Chances are we would have won the next game”

Whitney is currently helping Hartlepool United with their sports science department but says he is hungry to return to management again.

“I’m enjoying my time at Hartlepool but I’m definitely looking to manage again and feel I have a lot to give”

But for now Whitney is concentrating on his new business after setting up a sports injury and performance clinic in Stafford.
