A reserve-style team drew 0-0 with Coventry today in a practice match at the Essington training ground, giving younger squad members a chance to show their skills to manager Chris Hutchings.

Walsall have entered no official reserve league this season, only arranged friendlies, as well as participation in totesport.com Reserve League cup and Birmingham Senior Cup.

Manager Chris Hutchings told the official site: ‘It was an extremely worthwhile exercise for us.’

It gave a run out for striker Jon Macken, who is training with the Saddlers this week.

The small squad has owed to the youngsters finding themselves put on the bench each week as an unused substitute, with no weekly match action with the second string. These sorts of games will prove invaluable to them to show Hutchings what they are made of.

Team: Bevan, Westlake, Hickman, McDonald, Haynes, Patterson, Geddes, Marshall, Bowerman, Macken, Grigg.
